Summer Fun: Protect Yourself From the Sun Julianos_Blog.jpg

The warm weather means spending more time outside with your family, enjoying the weather, and going on vacation. With hot weather, comes the urgency to stay safe while playing in the sun. Sunscreen should be used by all members of the family to prevent sunburns and long-term effects later on in life, like melanoma, which is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Below are some tips to minimize sunburns and maximize fun:

Choose an SPF range between 15 and 50

SPF, or sun protection factor, is an estimate of how well the sunscreen will protect you from the sun’s rays. Choosing a sunscreen over 50 does not necessarily mean more protection, and it can mislead you to spend more time in the sun. SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97%, and SPF 50 blocks 98%.

Broad spectrum sunscreen is the best

Broad spectrum sunscreen protects you from two harmful types of ultra-violet (UV) rays: UVA and UVB. UVA rays can age your skin, and UVB rays can burn your skin. The sun is the strongest between 10:00am and 4:00pm, so you want to make sure you and your family are safe from the sun’s rays.

Reapply every two to three hours

Setting an alarm on your phone is a great way to remember to reapply your sunscreen while you’re in the pool. It’s easy to forget to put on more sunscreen when you’re splashing around, but it takes just a few minutes to ensure that you won’t burn.

Wear extra protection

Protective clothing, like sun shirts, and sun hats are helpful in staying safe from the sun’s rays. When you’re not in the pool, throw on a shirt or cover-up while you’re sitting outside.

Skin cancer is a serious consequence of improper sunscreen use. According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2012, there were an estimated 996,587 people living with melanoma in the United States.
