Opening
** TECHNICAL NOTE:  Pools with the standard (tarp) winter cover have been known to displace a substantial amount of water from the pool, upwards of 12,000 gallons, during a single winter season.  This happens due to a large accumulation of rain and snow during the fall and winter seasons, in which the winter cover fills and presses down on the pool’s body of water.  The pool’s body of water is able to escape through the in-wall skimmer’s collar extension and soak into the earth surrounding the pool without any visible evidence.  This principal is similar to if you filled a glass with water, then dropped ice cubes into it.  At a certain point, the water from the glass will begin to overflow the sides due to the displacement of the ice.  If you have a solid winter cover, it is highly recommended that any rain water and snow melt be pumped off of it as soon as it has thawed, then refilling the pool as necessary.

Over the past several years, we have performed openings where there was still a significant amount of water on the cover, in which we pumped it off.  After removing all the water from the cover, then removing the cover from the pool, the water level inside the pool was too low to actually start the filtration equipment.  It is highly recommended that you refill the pool to operating level, utilizing the technique listed above, prior to the arrival of our service technicians; otherwise it may delay your swimming pool operation.

If you would like to arrange for water delivery to be made at the time of your scheduled opening, please let us know and we can make the arrangements for you.  If you have a well, and would like to refill the pool on your own, we recommend trickling a small amount of water each day into the pool, as not to run the well dry.

•    Pools with a mesh winter cover (safety cover) should be opened in Mid-April to Early-May. The mesh cover is porous, which is designed to allow the rain and snow from the fall and winter to pass through the cover, keeping a neat appearance, as well as allowing the pool to be started right up in the springtime.  The only down side is that it also allows sunlight to penetrate into the pool, which will eventually cause algae to grow.  The sooner the pool is opened, the less time it has to develop algae, and you are able to start enjoying your pool without the headache of heavy cleanings.

•    ** Pools with a standard (tarp) winter cover should have the water pumped off as soon as the ice on top of cover has melted.  This will help prevent the cover from being accidentally pulled into the pool by its own weight, and help with the refilling process listed below.  If you do not have one, Juliano’s Pools sells a pump that is specifically designed for pumping off pool covers, and utilizes a standard garden hose.  Please contact our retail store for information regarding this product at (860) 870-1085.

•    Water level in the swimming pool should be filled to operating level, which is approximately ¾ of the way up the skimmer, in order to operate the pump & filter at the time of the scheduled opening.  This can be done without removing the cover, by placing a garden hose underneath the pool cover.  This process is most effective when there is little to no water on the top of the winter cover.

•    Pump, filter & other accessories (i.e. ladder(s), chlorinator, skimmer basket, etc.) must be in accessible location
for service technicians to install.

•    Ensure there is power to pump plug, and timer is set to proper time so power will be available for service
technicians to start up the filtration system (very important).

•    Ensure there is an available power outlet so the service technicians can power up electrical equipment if needed.
